Dr. J. Alphonso Dandy and Dr. Daalia Jones Talkin “Sugar” at Thankful Baptist Church, Savannah, GA

Savannah, Georgia, September 1, 2015 – Dr. J. Alphonso Dandy is taking Talking “Sugar” with Dandy on the road. Diabetes, known as sugar diabetes or “sugar”, to many senior citizens, is on the rise. The condition is increasing in children, and affects a disproportionate number of persons in the African American and Latino communities. In 2012, the number of Americans with diabetes was 29.1 million and 11.8 million were senior citizens over age 65. For the past year, Antioch Foot & Ankle Group has been sponsoring, Talkin “Sugar” with Dandy, once a month, at the Southside office, located at 9104 Middleground Road. September 1st, Talkin “Sugar” with Dandy debuted at The Marshes of Skidaway Island. As usual, Dr. Dandy, who is diabetic, opened the session talking about his diabetes and how it has affected him and members of his family. Dr. Patrick Nunan, one of the Podiatrists at Antioch was the guest speaker. He talked to the residents of The Marshes about foot complications associated with diabetes and how to manage the condition. On September 2nd, Talkin “Sugar” with Dandy travelled to Thankful Missionary Baptist Church’s senior citizen’s group. After Dr. Dandy opened the session, he gave the podium to Dr. Daalia Jones, Podiatrist at Antioch, who talked about the devastating effects of diabetes, especially with senior citizens. She told the seniors that the good news is that when diabetics get regular checkups from their primary care physician and their podiatrist, that complications are reduced dramatically. Both Podiatrists told their audience that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, toe, foot and leg amputations, and, that Antioch is committed to reducing the number of amputations associated with diabetes. Jacqueline Tomlin, Director of Marketing and Promotions at Antioch and an Ambassador for the American Diabetes Association gave out educational literature at The Marshes and Thankful about diabetes, and gave tips on diet and exercise. She also gave away books from the American Diabetes Association as prizes. Talkin “Sugar” with Dandy is a Free service to Antioch patients and the community. The next session at the Southside office will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 24th. Come and bring a friend.
