Serving Savannah With Free Sports Injury Education
Summer is just around the corner and athletic camps and sports teams are gearing up for sports competitions. That means lots of fun and lots of sports injuries to the foot and ankle. From college to elementary school age students playing, soccer, football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, track and field or gymnastics, someone is going to injure themselves. More than 38 million children and adolescents participate in organized sports in the United States each year. Still more participate in informal recreational activities. Staying active is essential to our health, but there is always the risk of sports-related injuries. Sprains and strains, repetitive motion injuries, fractures and breaks are going to happen. The key for athletes, coaches and parents is to know the injuries most common in the sport being played and educate themselves on prevention. That’s where Talkin Sports with Antioch and Dr. Patrick Nunan can be of assistance. . .
Antioch Foot & Ankle Group has created another program to educate the community called Talkin Sports with Antioch. Dr. Patrick J. Nunan heads up Talkin Sports. Athletes, young and old, need a podiatrist that is uniquely qualified to treat their injuries; but equally important, the athlete needs someone to educate him or her about prevention. Dr. Nunan believes that Talkin Sports will meet those needs and welcomes the opportunity to talk to college, high school, middle school and elementary school sports teams.
Talkin Sports recently visited the spring camp of the Gators, a football team of middle school students, here in Savannah. He talked to them about the prevention of sports injuries on the field, treating sports injuries and how to properly fit for athletic shoes.
Talkin Sports with Antioch is proud to have Dr. Nunan heading up the new Free service. Dr. Nunan is no stranger to being of service to the community. He started a program called “Fit Feet”, and serves as the Global Clinical Advisor of the Special Olympics. He has travelled worldwide examining athletes. Dr. Nunan was the Podiatry Consultant to all sports teams at Wilmington (Ohio) College for 15 years. He has lectured students, athletic trainers, physicians, and podiatrists nationally and internationally. He is published in several scientific journals, including a chapter in the book “Athletic Footwear and Orthoses in Sports Medicine” edited by Matthew B. Werd and E. Leslie Knight.
Dr. J. Alphonso Dandy, founder and CEO of Antioch Foot & Ankle Group, might have played professional baseball, if not for his degenerative eye disease. He still loves the sport and welcomes the opportunity for Antioch to assist young athletes in our community. Dr. Nunan is also an athlete. He currently competes in Master’s swimming, open water swimming, triathlons and running events. Talkin Sports with Antioch is another avenue where both Dr. Dandy and Dr. Nunan believe that Antioch Foot & Ankle can make a difference and impact young athletes in a positive way.
